Wrist & Hand Pain

Wrist and or hand pain can be localised, refer pain up into the arm or down to the fingers, all of which can be debilitating but most of all worrying. Our Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists are all qualified to assess and diagnose many types of wrist and hand pain. We can create management plans to treat and prevent your symptoms and put your mind at ease.

Here are a few common causes of wrist and hand pain that we manage regularly at Summit East Sheen and East Grinstead.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition where the median nerve becomes trapped or impinged as it passes through the wrist in a tunnel created by the ligaments in the wrist. This tunnel can compress the nerve after trauma (such as a dislocation or a fracture) but can also occur gradually. Offending ligaments can become thicker, not allowing the median nerve to move and slide easily. As nerves are very sensitive to external pressures Carpal tunnel syndrome typically presents with pain and numbness/pins & needles in the palm and first three fingers. It can often be made worse by jobs or hobbies that involve repetitive wrist movements such as typing, knitting or manual labour.

Removing the pressure on the nerve is important in the initial stage of treatment, this can be done with wrist splints, or other ergonomic aids to aid the causative activities. Treatment to help mobilise the nerve, through manual therapy techniques, including soft tissue massage and mobilisation as well as acupuncture and nerve gliding techniques help to reduce pain and discomfort.

Trigger Finger

Trigger finger is a “snapping” or “locking” condition of any of the digits of the hand when opened or closed. Trigger finger is medically termed Stenosing tenosynovitis. Trigger finger is caused by local swelling from inflammation or scarring of the tendon sheath around the flexor tendons. These are tendons that normally pull the affected digit inward toward the palm.

The condition is often caused by repetitive trauma or previous injury and can be managed well with manual therapy or steroid injection if inflammation is present. Shockwave Therapy may be helpful in chronic cases.

Osteoarthritis

The hands and wrist have many joints open to degeneration over time, especially the base of the thumb. Joint narrowing and cartilage thinning can cause pain around the wrist or fingers, mostly on activities like gripping or typing. Onset is mostly gradual without injury but early onset can be caused by trauma or previous surgery.

Hand and wrist degenerative change can respond well to manual treatments and acupuncture alongside a specific exercise program lead by your chiropractor, osteopath or physio.

Ulnar Nerve Palsy

The ulnar nerve can be compressed at the wrist at the Tunnel of Guyon, located on the insideof the hand at the wrist when the palm is facing up. Prolonged compression is common in cyclists and desk workers who are left with pain, tingling or numbness in the 4th and 5th digits. Weakness in the 4th and 5th fingers can occur when compression is severe or longer lived. Symptoms often resolve on their own with reduced compression and activity modification, however nerve glides and myofascial treatments can often speed up this process and prevent recurrence.
