Ankle/ Foot Pain

Ankle and or foot pain can be localised, refer pain up into the leg or down to the toes, all of which can be debilitating but most of all worrying. Our Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapistsare all qualified to assess and diagnose many types of ankle and foot pain. We can create management plans to treat and prevent your symptoms and put your mind at ease.

Here are a few common causes of ankle and foot pain that we manage regularly at Summit East Sheen and East Grinstead.

Ankle Sprain/ Strain

An ankle sprain can cause significant pain and bruising around the ankle joint. You have many ligaments both on the outside (ATFL/TFL/CFL) and inside (deltoid ligaments) of your ankle. Most commonly an ‘inversion’ sprain will sprain the outer ligaments of the ankle. This can be grade 1-3, with grade 1 being fairly low level bruising and laxity to grade 3 a significant or full tear of the ligament or ligaments leading to large amounts of instability and bruising. All types of sprain will lead to dysfunction and pain and will hugely increase your chances of re-injury if not dealt with properly.

Initially diagnosing the issue, ruling out fracture and beginning the treatment process is necessary before gradually building a staged rehab program. This plus taping and advice on footwear and or insoles can help repair and decrease your chances of re-injury in the future.

Plantar Fasciopathy

Plantar fasciopathy or fasciitis is the most common cause of chronic heel pain in the population, an estimated 10% of people will suffer at some point in their lives. The plantar fascia is the fibrous link between the toes and the heel and supports the arch of the foot. Most people describe a very sharp stabbing pain during the first 2-3 steps out of bed in the morning. The pain is usually located on the inside of the heel and is associated with a sudden increase in activity, stiff or tight ankles, and jobs that involve prolonged periods of standing. Treatment is different in each case but can include orthotic prescription, support taping and manual mobilisation of the calf, foot and ankle and surrounding musculature.

Shockwave Therapy is the gold standard treatment if you have been suffering for more than 6 weeks even if previous treatment and rest has not helped.

Sinus Tarsi Syndrome

The sinus tarsi is a small bony canal which runs into the ankle under the talus ankle bone. Damage to the sinus tarsi can be caused from overuse or an ankle sprain. Usually symptoms involve pain on the outside of the ankle worse on weight bearing, especially running on a camber. Treatment involves offloading the area using orthotics or advice on activity modification plus manual treatment to speed recovery and improve biomechanics.

Our clinicians are qualified to offer advice on ‘back to running programs’ and provide bike fitting or running analysis, both of which can help return to sport and prevent recurrence!
